A study in juice

I played Pinbullet more than I dare to admit during the presentation of all the other KluJam 2021 submissions. So now that the jam is over, I wondered what to do with it, besides adding proper art + sound of course. My conclusion: I'll squeeze the hell out of it. The main mechanic is as simple as it gets, so it fits perfectly for a little experiment on game feel.

First things first, camera shake! Check. Next, bullet casings flying around! Check. I also added a limitation on how often you can fire in rapid succession and plan on adding UI indicators similar to Downwell. Some other things on my list are

  • smoke trail for the bomb
  • particle effect at the bullet hit location
  • stretching/squeezing the bomb and the bumpers on impact
  • muzzle flash
  • combos!

If you also have an idea for something juicy that would enhance the game, feel free to leave comment ;)

Good idea :] One thing that might be nice is temporary chromatic aberation when you hit the bumpers for example. It has been overdone a bit but I think it still can be a nice effect when used well.

I'll have a look into it, but I doubt that I know how to use it well :P

Well, it’s a learning experience. Just don’t overdo it I guess. I need to learn a lot about juiceing up games myself. You are familiar with this nice video I assume? If not, have a look: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLVbXUoK1ADqs1ZrQ2jr2c5CV9EZURKcRd The rest of the videos in the playlist are also nice, in my very personal opinion ;]
